About Us

Festival on the Moor is a voluntary community arts group, based in the Esk Valley, North Yorkshire. It was created in 2002 to help the North York Moors National Park celebrate it’s 50th birthday, and has carried on since then as an independent organisation.

Our Aims are:

Promoting folk song, music and cultural activities within the North York Moors and the surrounding area, especially the coastal region.

The promotion of folk music to the public / socially excluded people through involvement in projects.

Promoting the use of folk songs and tunes in schools and throughout the community.

Encouraging and fostering participation in folk music, especially by children and young people.

We stage 2 major festivals in the area – Great North Folk Festival in May www.festivalonthemoor.co.uk and Whitby Ahoy! in July www.whitbyseafest.co.uk

The Festival has a young people’s group, ‘Shoots & Roots‘, for young people who are interested in local heritage, folk music, songwriting, acting etc. We have organised numerous educational projects over the years, supported in many cases by the Heritage Lottery Fund, working with youngsters from Whitby and all across the National Park area, to explore and celebrate their heritage and culture through folk music and song. Researching areas such as ironstone mining, whaling, WW1, shipwrecks, Captain Cook and Capt Scoresby, we have created poetry, songs, Folk Operas, visual art, CD’s and websites and involved hundreds of children and young people, as well a more mature members of our communities.

Festival on the Moor has had many incarnations with events being held across the region in a variety of venues from artist’s studios, village greens to large town halls. The May festival spent several years within the wonderful Ryedale Folk Museum in Hutton le Hole but, after outgrowing it, moved to the truly magical Botton Village in Danby Dale, where we renamed it ‘Great North Folk Festival’ and made our May Bank Holiday Weekend home for the last 4 years.

Whitby Ahoy!, our annual celebration of the sea and all things maritime, takes place in the wonderful seaside town each July. Find us in Whitby Pavilion and a range of outdoor spots, for a lively festival of sea music, shanties, maritime characters and crafts. Watch out for a few pirates too !!
